Hi, it’s Michael Ghobrial here from Sure Dental at Wavell Heights in Brisbane, and I recently sent my Dad to the Implant Surgeon to get some dental implants. And he was asking me what to expect with the procedure and whether he would need any bone grafting, to replace his teeth with dental implants. The question we often get asked is, “Do I have enough bone for an implant, and will it be successful, or do I need some bone grafting?”
And so I thought I’d share this video with you to give you a bit of an idea about when bone grafting might be needed, and when we can avoid it.

Our philosophy here is if a patient, unfortunately, can’t save a tooth and we need to consider an implant, we like to get the Implant Surgeon to remove the tooth so that they preserve as much of the structure and bone there as possible and prepare the area and then they can sometimes place the implant at the same time, or they go back in at the perfect time frame to place the implant which is often 10 – 12 weeks post extraction.
Often with great planning in those cases, we can avoid the need for any significant or large bone grafting because we get to harvest the site. We get to prepare the site and it makes the process much more simple. But sometimes teeth have been missing for a while or the infection that has cost the patient the tooth, actually means that there’s bone missing and bone grafting is required.

We will always get a 3D CT scan called a Cone Beam scan. This gives us a really great 3D view of what’s going on and where the bone is and allows us to plan the implant surgery and see exactly whether we need bone grafting or not. And if we do, again we get the Specialists to very carefully perform the procedure, allow adequate healing so that the implant can be placed predictably and that we can restore it very naturally and beautifully, and we want it to be stable.
If you think you need dental implants, or if you have any questions around a dental implant procedure, or whether you might need bone grafting, why don’t you direct message us at suredental.com.au or give us a call on 07 3256 9111. We would love to look after you. See you in the next video.
