The very first veneers date back to 1928 when Californian dentist, Charles Pincus, used them to change several actors’ appearances during a film shoot. Forward to the modern day and the current veneer technology we recognise, we’ve upgraded acrylic veneers for either composite or dental porcelain. These stronger materials are mostly used by cosmetic dentists to improve a patient’s tooth aesthetics, with veneers being used to restore fractured or discoloured teeth. However, in most cases, veneers are used to create a bright smile commonly referred to as a ‘Hollywood’ makeover, which subtly references their original purpose.

Other uses include:
Tooth restoration for worn teeth that contribute to an ‘aged’ appearance
Hiding mispositioned and crooked teeth through the clever placement of veneers
Using more than one veneer to close gaps or lengthen teeth to create a straighter, more uniformed look
Hiding gum recession by covering the black triangles that form between teeth
Whitening teeth that won’t naturally whiten due to lifestyle or genetic factors
Because of the relatively straightforward process involved in having veneers fitted, most patients report how they enjoy an instant confidence boost, with a smile they are proud to show off. (Note that veneers cannot be fitted on patients with gum disease or poor oral health. These issues will need to be addressed before veneers can be considered).

Types of veneers

Z

Composite

Lasting around 4 years, these veneers can be placed directly on the tooth and ‘built up’ in the mouth by the dentist. The overall effect depends on the skill of the dental practitioner, so be sure to ask for previous examples of their work before you commit to any dentist.
Z

Porcelain

These veneers are usually made by a dental ceramist in a laboratory. They are then bonded to the tooth using resin cement. Laminate veneers can last 10 or more years due to their high-performance rate and minimal plaque retention.

Securing the Veneers

The preparation time for fitting veneers can be done within a few weeks, however for great results extreme care needs to be taken by the dentist during the procedure.

We start with a smile design phase, this is an incredibly important stage to make sure that you get the smile you want and that your veneers look like a part of you. Photos and a 3D digital scan of your teeth will be taken on your first visit, which will then be used to do your smile design. We will partner with our dental ceramist to build up a digital model of your desired smile, which will be used as a basis for creating the perfect veneers to match your preferred aesthetic. Just like building a house, the design phase is incredibly important and if neglected can result in teeth looking bulky, long or fake. So please ensure your dentist does a thorough design phase and shows you what it will look like in your mouth.

After we are happy with the design, two appointments are usually required:
