Dental Veneers Brisbane, Wavell Heights, Clayfield

The very first veneers date back to 1928 when Californian dentist, Charles Pincus, used them to change several actors’ appearances during a film shoot. Forward to the modern day and the current veneer technology we recognise, we’ve upgraded acrylic veneers for either composite or dental porcelain. These stronger materials are mostly used by cosmetic dentists to improve a patient’s tooth aesthetics, with veneers being used to restore fractured or discoloured teeth. However, in most cases, veneers are used to create a bright smile commonly referred to as a ‘Hollywood’ makeover, which subtly references their original purpose.

Other uses include:
Tooth restoration for worn teeth that contribute to an ‘aged’ appearance
Hiding mispositioned and crooked teeth through the clever placement of veneers
Using more than one veneer to close gaps or lengthen teeth to create a straighter, more uniformed look
Hiding gum recession by covering the black triangles that form between teeth
Whitening teeth that won’t naturally whiten due to lifestyle or genetic factors
Because of the relatively straightforward process involved in having veneers fitted, most patients report how they enjoy an instant confidence boost, with a smile they are proud to show off. (Note that veneers cannot be fitted on patients with gum disease or poor oral health. These issues will need to be addressed before veneers can be considered).

Types of veneers

Z

Composite

Lasting around 4 years, these veneers can be placed directly on the tooth and ‘built up’ in the mouth by the dentist. The overall effect depends on the skill of the dental practitioner, so be sure to ask for previous examples of their work before you commit to any dentist.
Z

Porcelain

These veneers are usually made by a dental ceramist in a laboratory. They are then bonded to the tooth using resin cement. Laminate veneers can last 10 or more years due to their high-performance rate and minimal plaque retention.

Securing the Veneers

The preparation time for fitting veneers can be done within a few weeks, however for great results extreme care needs to be taken by the dentist during the procedure.

We start with a smile design phase, this is an incredibly important stage to make sure that you get the smile you want and that your veneers look like a part of you. Photos and a 3D digital scan of your teeth will be taken on your first visit, which will then be used to do your smile design. We will partner with our dental ceramist to build up a digital model of your desired smile, which will be used as a basis for creating the perfect veneers to match your preferred aesthetic. Just like building a house, the design phase is incredibly important and if neglected can result in teeth looking bulky, long or fake. So please ensure your dentist does a thorough design phase and shows you what it will look like in your mouth.

After we are happy with the design, two appointments are usually required:
For Preparation
For Fitting
When it comes to preparing your veneers, there are four types of preparation available:
Window
Feather
Bevel
Incisal Overlap
They each have pros and cons that your dentist will discuss with you. Then, once you’re agreed on the process and final look, your dentist will ensure the veneers fit by reducing the tooth structure (as minimally as possible), although sometimes this isn’t necessary and you will be fitted with what’s known as ‘non-prep’ veneers.

In-between the 2 appointments, you’ll be fitted with temporary veneers made out of composite; and while you wear them, you get to trial the final colour, length, and shape of your veneers to make sure that you love them. The second appointment involves trying in and if we are all happy carefully cementing each veneer.

Throughout this process, Sure Dental Brisbane will make you as comfortable as possible. We want you to be happy, so we encourage you to ask us questions and be an active participant in your dental treatment. That way, the outcome should be exactly what you’re hoping for and avoids any disappointment.

Looking after Your Veneers

Practising good oral health is always important; however, it’s imperative that you keep your veneers as clean as your own teeth to avoid gum disease or tooth decay, which would show up more obviously beneath your veneers.

Further advice includes:
Schedule regular hygienist appointments and visit your dentist at least twice a year to make sure everything is in order and your veneers are strong and healthy.
Keep in mind how your ‘bite’ now fits together. Some patients grind their teeth in their sleep, which can damage teeth and veneers, so to combat this you might need to wear a mouthguard at night.
Be careful when you chew. Porcelain isn’t as strong as enamel, so make sure you don’t accidentally crack a tooth on a hard piece of food.

Whether is to restore your teeth, upgrade your smile, or maintain your optimum oral health, we understand it is important to have clarity on the investment.

Removing Veneers

On average, veneers last around 10 years (or longer if you’ve looked after them properly and maintained excellent oral hygiene!) However, over time they will naturally need replacing, whether it’s because your smile has changed, or the tooth beneath is decayed or the veneers are changing in appearance. In this case, the process is much like it was the first time you had your veneers fitted. Your dentist will cut away the old veneer and prepare the underlying tooth for the placement of your brand new one.

Risk Factors

Like all cosmetic dentistry, veneers come with their own set of risks. The main one to consider is how choosing to have veneers fitted is an irreversible process. They’re often more costly, and if they chip or crack, replacements are usually needed because repairs aren’t usually a viable option.

Other risks include:
Sensitivity to hot or cold food and drinks due to the underlying enamel being removed.
Issues with the colour matching and whitening of your teeth. This needs to be done before the veneers are fitted so the right shade can be chosen.
Decay is still a possibility with veneers, which can be more costly in the long run if you don’t keep on top of your oral hygiene.
Many of these risks are reduced significantly with a careful design process and great oral hygiene and regular professional maintenance.

Cost

The cost for veneers generally depends on five things:

The type of veneers needed/wanted
The number of veneers required for the desired results
The complexity of your treatment
The experience and skill of the Dentist and their ceramist
If the veneers are being made in Australia or off-shore in third world countries
The rate varies from practice to practice. Investing in a good dentist with expertise and skill in this complex field with a good reputation and references is always recommended.
