What are Wisdom Teeth?
What are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the third and last set of molars to erupt in the mouth. They are located at the back of the upper and lower jaws. They usually erupt later in life, generally in a person’s late teens to early twenties. Not everyone has wisdom teeth and they are the teeth that are most commonly missing. How wisdom teeth emerge differs to each individual. While many people don’t have problems because of them, others may experience pain in the jaw, gums and even the teeth next to the wisdom teeth.
Problems with Wisdom Teeth
Because they grow at the back of the mouth and are the last to emerge, wisdom teeth are known to cause dental problems. These problems include infection, cysts, gum disease and tooth decay thus causing pain and discomfort. Often these problems are caused from an oral hygiene issue and are difficult to clean with brushing and flossing, leaving them susceptible to decay and gum disease.
Sometimes wisdom teeth grow in sideways “impacted” and cause other problems. To make things worse, they can remain hidden under the bone and gums, so you might not even be aware there is a problem until it is too late.
How do I Know if I Have Wisdom Teeth Problems?
Some people do not experience any problems or symptoms with their wisdom teeth however others can show signs and symptoms that are common with problematic wisdom teeth, such as:
