What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third and last set of molars to erupt in the mouth. They are located at the back of the upper and lower jaws. They usually erupt later in life, generally in a persons late teens to early twenties. Not everyone has wisdom teeth and they are the teeth that are most commonly missing. How wisdom teeth emerge differs to each individual. While many people don’t have problems because of them, others may experience pain in the jaw, gums and even the teeth next to the wisdom teeth.

Problems with Wisdom Teeth

Because they grow at the back of the mouth and are the last to emerge, wisdom teeth are known to cause dental problems. These problems include infection, cysts, gum disease and tooth decay thus causing pain and discomfort. Often these problems are caused from an oral hygiene issue and are difficult to clean with brushing and flossing, leaving them susceptible to decay and gum disease.

Sometimes wisdom teeth grow in sideways “impacted” and cause other problems. To make things worse, they can remain hidden under the bone and gums, so you might not even be aware there is a problem until it is too late.

How do I Know if I Have Wisdom Teeth Problems?

Some people do not experience any problems or symptoms with their wisdom teeth however others can show signs and symptoms that are common with problematic wisdom teeth, such as:

Z
Swelling of the gums at the back of the mouth
Z
Bleeding, tender, sore gums
Z
Jaw pain
Z
Pain in teeth from an unknown source
Z
Cysts in the gums
Z
Recurring infections of unknown origin
With technology like digital x-rays and scanning, we can find if a tooth is impacted, under your gum or pushing on other teeth. And with an early diagnosis, it is much easier and cost-effective to treat the teeth before they cause a problem.

Who is a Candidate for Wisdom Tooth Removal?

Anyone may need their wisdom teeth removed at any age. However, because the roots of teeth are more developed after 25 years, it is more common for younger patients to have theirs removed. Our experienced dental professionals here at Sure Dental know what to look for and can find problems early, like crowding, risk of infection or risk of pain due to a partially erupted wisdom tooth.

Everyone’s teeth develop at different times, and sometimes problems due to wisdom teeth don’t arise until adulthood. That’s why we use the best technology possible during an examination to find the cause of any dental issues so there are no surprises. We at Sure Dental take a conservative approach to all dentistry, so we will evaluate the best treatment and outcome for all of our patients.

The Visit to Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Here at Sure Dental we work with the best oral maxillofacial surgeons in Queensland. Your comfort is our priority, will discuss all anesthesia and relaxation options with you to make the visit as comfortable as possible. Most of our patient choose to have a general anesthetic and go to sleep for the procedure however if you do choose to be awake and have a local anesthetic to have your wisdom teeth out in the dental chair, this is what you can expect;

You will receive an anesthetic, so you don’t feel a thing
If you are extremely anxious, you may be given sedation
The surrounding gum area will be treated to make the removal easy
If your tooth is impacted, a small amount of bone may be removed
Tooth is removed
The tooth socket, or opening, is cleaned
The opening will be close with sutures, if necessary

What Now?

If you have elected to go to sleep for general anesthesia to have your wisdom teeth removed, you may feel drowsy afterwards and will need someone to drive you home after the procedure. After dental surgery and wisdom teeth removal, it is common to have swelling and mild discomfort for up to a week. Your dentist will give you postoperative instructions to carry out at home. These include;

Pain relief
Apply a gauze pad and change it when necessary, if instructed by your dentist
Apply an ice pack to your jaw to reduce pain and swelling, if needed
Keep your head elevated, even while sleeping, for the first 24 hours
Do not eat hot foods or drink hot beverages for a 24 hours
Avoid rinsing your mouth and spitting for 24 hours
After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water
Avoid using a toothbrush in the area for 24 hours
Opt for a soft food diet for the first few days
Do not smoke
Do not drink alcohol
Do not drink from a straw
These post operative instructions are advised to promote healing, keep the sites clean and avoid a painful condition called a dry socket. A dry socket is when the blood clot has fallen out from the wisdom teeth extraction site out and the jaw bone is exposed.
