Last Saturday, I took my five-year-old to his friend’s birthday party at Ascot. I was chatting to one of the mums there, and when she found out I was a dentist, she asked me, “Hey Michael, my mother had a couple of teeth extracted a few years ago, and she is thinking of getting dental implants to replace them. But she has really low pain tolerance, that’s what turning her off from getting implants. Is the dental implant procedure painful?”
I thought it was a great question, and we had a good chat about it. So I thought it would also be useful to make this video for you guys to answer that question, just in case you or your loved ones are also considering a dental implant.
So, Is a dental implant procedure painful?
Well, generally speaking, the procedure is actually far less painful than you would imagine. Because we need to preserve all of the soft tissue and as much of the bone as possible, by definition, the implant procedure or the implant placement procedure is actually a very, very delicate process and is quite a-traumatic. There will be a bit of discomfort for a few days in the area, but it is definitely not significant pain, equally when a tooth needs to be removed for an implant placement.
Now, I am very blessed that I get to have one of the best implant specialists in Queensland to do our implants. He actually goes in, and he removes the teeth in a very a-traumatic fashion. It’s not like a normal dental extraction. It’s actually done in an extremely gentle way, and again, it’s because we want to preserve the bone. We want to preserve all of that tissue in that area so that it gives our implant a better result and makes it easier to get in there.
The one time that you can have some moderate pain and discomfort as a part of the implant procedure is if you need some significant bone grafting in the area. And again, with our patients that need this step, usually that grafting procedure is actually done under a general anesthetic. During the recovery afterwards, it can be a bit sore for the first two or three days. But with some good pain relief and good management to prevent infections, that discomfort’s not usually too significant.
