A dental implant is a type of fixture that is implanted into the bone to support a ‘prosthesis.’ The various types of dental prostheses available on the market include crowns, bridges and dentures. However, dental implants can also act as an anchor for orthodontic treatments.

The purpose of a dental implant is to affix or ‘bond’ materials such as titanium to the bone in a biological process known as ‘osseointegration.’ Once the integration has occurred and the area has healed, a prosthetic or abutment can be attached to the implant for the desired medical or aesthetic outcome.

As the process relies on your body accepting the implant, the likelihood of it succeeding depends on the overall health of your mouth, how effective the drugs that enhance osseointegration are, and the amount of stress the implant is able to carry for everyday use. This requires careful planning and consideration to ensure the best possible outcome. Our highly trained staff at Sure Dental will evaluate your requirements and work with you to build the correct treatment plan for your needs and desired aesthetic.

Do You Need Dental Implants?

If you’re someone who’s lost one or more teeth, then dental implants are a viable option for you. As long as your gum health is good, dental implants can help restore both the appearance and functionality of your teeth by supporting your jawbone and maintaining the integrity of your other healthy teeth. Those under 18 aren’t suitable for dental implants because their bone tissue isn’t fully developed yet, which means they’re unable to support the implant without it causing damage.

The staff were very friendly and professional. Dr Ghobrial was extremely reassuring and direct in presenting treatment options and the reasoning behind them.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Dental Implants?

Having a dental implant fitted is a surgical procedure, and like all surgeries, they carry a risk element. The risks during surgery can include excessive bleeding and nerve injury, while post-operative infection and failure of the osseointegration process can happen within the first six months. Longer term complications can include mechanical failure and peri-implantitis (destructive inflammation). That said, these complications can be minimised by careful planning and case selection. As long as you have healthy oral tissue, a well fitted implant and the correctly calculated biomechanical loads, dental implants are far more likely to survive placement and last for over 15 years.

The benefits of dental implants often outweigh the potential complications. Patients have reported a huge increase in their self-esteem and overall outlook on life. The loss of teeth is a nightmare to most people, so having dental implants fitted not only makes a patient’s teeth look better cosmetically, their function (such as chewing) is improved too. They are also a more secure option in comparison to other solutions like dentures.

Making Your Implants

Once you’ve made an appointment with Sure Dental Brisbane, your needs will be assessed and your available options will be discussed with you. For the surgical aspect, we partner with the best Dental implant specialists in Brisbane.

We need to work out how suitable your mouth is before we can commit to fitting dental implants, and we may even have to remove further teeth or treat your gums before we can commence with your chosen treatment plan.

If you’re suitable, we’ll take an impression of your mouth, which we will take a digital scan and share with our dental technicians who will use various modern tools to measure, create, and test your unique implants in a laboratory. Titanium is the material predominantly used for dental implants due to how well it bonds with bones.

Fitting the Implants

At Sure Dental, we undertake a careful planning process before we fit your dental implant/s. Our dentists need to assess and define the position and number of implants required to ensure the long-term health of your prosthetic/s.

They need to discern any biomechanical forces created (such as those from chewing), and then position your implants so they’re at the optimum angle for adjacent teeth. This can include using lab simulations or through computer simulations and surgical guides called stents. We share this information with the implant surgical specialist that we partner with.

Ultimately, the long-term success depends on how well the dental implants have osseointegrated, and how healthy the bone and gingiva are pre and post-surgery. That is why we only use the best Implant specialists and the most reliable implant brands.

On rare occasions, due to the possibility of atrophy, sinus lifts or gingival grafts are sometimes required to support the ideal gum and bone conditions for your required dental implants.

Once this is established, an abutment is attached to the implant before the final prosthetic, such as a crown, is fixed to it using dental cement or lag screws. For those with removable prosthetics, such as dentures, an adapter is placed in the prosthetic to secure it to the abutment.

Your dental implants are now ready for placement, which usually consists of five steps:

Incisions for the soft tissue reflection

Intricate and precise high-speed drilling

Careful low-speed drilling to expand the pilot hole

Placement (screwing) of the implant into your bone

Adapting the gingiva tissue around the implant to encourage healing

Throughout the procedure, you will be made as comfortable and safe as possible. With Sure Dental, you are in good and experienced hands.

Looking after Your Implants

Once an implant is placed, it requires the same care as your other teeth. Although the implant isn’t affected by sugar or other tooth-rotting ingredients, there is still a need to remove plaque and keep the area clean to avoid degradation.

Bone loss occurs at a similar rate to your other teeth, so regular appointments with your hygienist who will be able to professionally clean your teeth and keep your gums healthy are essential, as is scheduling check-ups with your dentist to ensure everything is in order.
