Hi. It’s Dr Michael Ghobrial here from Sure Dental at Wavell Heights in Brisbane.

Out of the hundreds of consultations and hundreds of Invisalign cases that we have done over the years, one of the most common questions, particularly for my adult patients like Jack from Hamilton, is, “Is Invisalign going to affect my lifestyle, how I’m going to speak and how I’m going to eat?” And so, I thought I’d record this video to give you a bit of an idea of how Invisalign treatment will affect your lifestyle.

Now, something that a lot of patients don’t know about me is about 15 years ago, I actually had Invisalign myself. I had some quite severe crowding, and I’d finally had enough and decided to do something about it and straighten my teeth. I really didn’t want to do fixed braces, and so I went ahead with Invisalign. So I guess the answer to these questions is more from a personal experience, as well as seeing how it has affected our patients.

So, will Invisalign affect my lifestyle, how I speak, and how I eat?

Number 1

How I speak… Well, when Invisalign is first placed, those first couple of hours, your speech is affected. I do remember getting my Invisalign placed during my lunch break, and then I had a new patient consultation straight after.

Now, that patient didn’t realise that my speech was affected, but certainly, my dental assistant had a good laugh as I struggled through my words a little bit for those first couple of hours. However, that’s how long it took for others to notice that my speech was affected. And it took about three or four days before I no longer noticed any difference in my speech. So, yes, it does affect it only for a very short amount of time, but compared to the benefits of it, I didn’t mind.

Number 2

Next, does it affect how I eat? Well, one of the beautiful things about Invisalign is you take the trays out to eat, so you can still eat normally. You can bite into apples pretty much the whole time, except for those first couple of days when you change the trays and things are a little bit tender. But, generally speaking, what you eat doesn’t really change, which is really great.

And equally, how you clean your teeth doesn’t change. You can brush, you can floss, and you can do a really good clean without having to try to navigate around braces, which is a really big win.

Number 3

Finally, is it going to affect your lifestyle? Well, a little bit is the honest answer. With Invisalign, each time you eat and drink something that’s not water, you need to take them out. You need to floss, and you need to brush your teeth.

So, for me, how it affected my lifestyle was really around snacking. I pretty much just cut out snacks, and I’d have my breakfast, my lunch, and my dinner because I just couldn’t be bothered cleaning my teeth more than three times a day in those times. Other than that, the effect on lifestyle is reasonably minimal.

If there are special occasions for patients or weekends where they’re going to need them out a little bit more than normal, we will plan for that, and we plan ways around that to allow them to still have their life and have their special occasions whilst not compromising the tooth movement.

So that’s it! That is the extent of how Invisalign can affect your lifestyle.
