Hi, it’s Dr Michael Ghobrial here from Sure Dental in Brisbane. We get a lot of enquiries about dental veneers and porcelain veneers and what the process is to get veneers. So I thought I’d record this video to give you an idea of what the process is for a patient who is wanting porcelain veneers, and if they’re a suitable candidate for this treatment, or if it’s something that’s going to be beneficial to them and safe and good for them.
With us here at Sure Dental, the first step for dental veneers is always a thorough consultation. At that consultation, we like to meet our patients, assess or hear their story, hear what it is that they’d like to achieve. We like to assess the teeth. We take a full record of photos, a digital scan, and I do an intraoral examination, and we see what’s going on in the mouth and clinically, whether veneers would be suitable, whether there’s anything else going on in the mouth. We only want to put porcelain veneers on nice, healthy mouths with healthy gums that are going to be long-lasting and good for our patients.
So after the initial consultation, if the patient would like to proceed from there, normally they would see one of our Hygienists and get their teeth cleaned, and we would commence a bit of pre-treatment whitening. At the same time, we send out our scans to create a Digital Smile Design. We get our laboratory to mock up the smile.
At the next appointment, we see our patients to show them some different options of what the smile could look like shape-wise. So we get to begin to try that in their mouth, show them a glimpse of where we’re thinking of going, and we get to assess whether what looks good on the computer actually looks good in their smile. This also helps us to get a better idea of what the patient’s thinking. So we want to design a smile that’s beautiful, but we also want to design a smile that that particular individual loves.
At that point, we either, okay it or send it back for another mock-up or some adjustments. Once we’re happy with that, we schedule our veneer preparation appointment. That is where we shape the teeth and finish some margins to allow us to fit the veneers. At that point, we scan the teeth and we’ll normally make some provisional veneers that you wear for about 10 to 14 days while our ceramist is designing and making those veneers.
Once the veneers are ready to deliver, we try them in with a try-in paste. And I like to give patients plenty of time out in the natural light, where they get to see the veneers, assess whether they like the look of them, the colour of them, the feel of them. Often they’ll take photos, they’ll FaceTime their family and friends and show them what we’re talking about. And if and only if we’re happy and the patient is really, really happy will we proceed with cementing those veneers.
If there are any adjustments that are required, we will gladly send them back to the ceramist and get whatever changes we would like done so that we can deliver some veneers that really look fantastic and that the patient’s really happy with.
The next step after that is to actually cement the veneers. We have to do that very carefully. The cementing process is a really important part of the process. Once they’re cemented, we let you go live with them for a couple of weeks, and then we like to review things, take some after photos, and just balance anything and smooth anything that needs smoothing. At that point, we will normally take a scan for a night guard so that we can construct a guard to help protect the teeth and help protect this beautiful investment of those smiles.
From there, our patients go on just a regular maintenance program. So normally that’s a six-monthly hygiene where we get to keep the gums nice and healthy, and I get to come in and examine the teeth and make sure that everything is going beautifully with the veneers.
