Last Monday, I conducted a cosmetic consultation with Graham, one of our new patients from Chermside. Graham is an extremely busy businessman. During our discussion, we talked about the possibility of getting porcelain veneers to address his significantly worn-down teeth.
He wanted to improve the length of his teeth and also brighten his smile. And for him, time is very, very precious. And he was asking me, “Michael, what’s the downtime after I get the porcelain veneers?”
I get it, everyone is very busy these days, and we want to have as little downtime as possible, So I thought I would make a short video to answer that question just in case you are also thinking of getting porcelain veneers.
So with the porcelain veneers, generally speaking, there are two appointments where we’re doing the work. The first appointment is the preparation appointment, and the second appointment is the cementation, or when we put the final veneers in.
The downtime after both appointments is actually nothing at all. So oftentimes, when we do porcelain veneers the way we do them here at Sure Dental, it is such a minimally invasive procedure that normally, we even do it without anesthetic.
Even though that first appointment can be quite long depending on how many veneers we’re doing, whether that’s two hours, three hours, four hours, maybe even sometimes five hours, afterwards, people walk out feeling normal, and they walk out with temporary veneers or provisional veneers.
And so they actually walk out with a bit of a trial run of what their veneers are going to look like, which is always exciting. You leave with a smile that’s nicer than the one you walked in with. In terms of downtime afterwards, you can actually go straight to work. There’s nothing really to stop you from working or exercising or doing whatever you like. The only thing to be mindful of is not to bite hard things, like eating crab or nuts, since afterall, the temporary veneers are… temporary.
Equally, two weeks later, when you return, and we remove the temporary veneers and place the final veneers, again, there is no downtime afterwards. As soon as that’s done, those teeth are good to go, ready to be able to function and chew and bite into things and brush and floss normally.
Most patients can go straight to work or on a lunch date if that’s what they would prefer. And so, really, there is very minimal downtime after the time we spent together with porcelain veneers.
