Last Tuesday, I saw Vanessa, one of our long-term patients from Chemside, who had some no-prep veneers replaced. These veneers were originally placed about six or seven years ago.
They need to be replaced because of decay and inflammation around the gum level, so Vanessa asked me a very natural question, it was, “Michael, are you going to redo these as no-prep veneers again, or are you going to do them as standard porcelain veneer?”, and I explained to her that I’d prefer to do them as a standard porcelain veneer. So she said, “Okay, well, what’s the difference in the procedure compared to what I had six years ago?”
I thought it was a fantastic question, so I decided to make a video about it.
The main difference from a procedural point of view is a no-prep veneer is just that, there is no preparation. We clean the teeth, scan them, send them to our laboratory, and get our ceramist to make the veneers.
However, with a standard veneer, we carefully prepare to finish lines and margins for these veneers to end too. Though this costs a little bit of tooth structure and, when done well, it’s a very, very, very minimal tooth structure, it allows the veneers to have a finish line. It also means that their contour and how they come out of the gum look more natural. It also means that you can clean those veneers easily and well, increasing their longevity.
With our normal standard porcelain veneers, the tooth preparation is so minimal that 90% of the time, we do the whole procedure without any anesthetic, but what it allows us to do is provide veneers that look far more natural, they look better, you don’t get that horsey look about the teeth, but also equally importantly, veneers that are much easier to maintain in terms of brushing and flossing and keeping the gum health and also keeping decay away.
So Vanessa understood these differences. We proceeded to replace her veneers, and she was so happy because she found the appearance of the standard porcelain veneers much more natural compared to the no-prep veneers she had six years ago. She was also thrilled to learn that we expected her new veneers to last much longer than six years.
