I wanted to take a minute to record this video and let you know a little bit about Digital Smile Design, where it fits in our new patient’s smile consultation process and the importance of doing something like a Digital Smile Design before committing to any cosmetic work for your teeth.
Now, a Digital Smile Design is where we have the technology to be able to use photos of your face and also a 3D scan of your teeth, and we can put these things together to do a digital mock-up of what your smile could look like. The beauty of a Digital Smile Design is it allows us to do it really accurately using the information in your mouth, and it helps us establish what are the right tooth proportions, what’s the right tooth positioning, what shapes of teeth should we consider, rounded teeth or more squared teeth or tapered teeth? And a lot of that is related to the shape of your face, ethnicity, even your age. And so we can use the Digital Smile Design to look at different options for any smile modifications we want to make and assess what effect that has on the overall face.
The other thing we often use our Digital Smile Design for is not just a set of photos to be able to show a patient. We’ve got the digital technology to be able to mock that up onto a 3D model, and so we can print that up onto a 3D model and be able to see that, but more than just seeing it on a 3D model, we can then superimpose what’s on that 3D model into your mouth with just a temporary material where we don’t touch your teeth, and we get to do a trial to see whether that Digital Smile Design, that smile that looks great on the computer screen, actually looks great in your mouth. Also, we use our Digital Smile Design a lot to assess whether we’re happy with the direction we want to take.
Sometimes it’s really helpful to decide whether we need to make teeth wider, whether we have enough room for an implant to replace a tooth… There are lots of things that it really helps us to do. For my patients, it’s really important, before we go ahead with any cosmetic work, that they get a great feel for the direction that we’re taking. We don’t like surprises at Sure Dental. We don’t like a “Wow” at the end of the process. We want the “Wow” from the start. And so we love to try the Digital Smile Design in your mouth so that you can see it, I can see it, we can make adjustments to it there and then before we touch your teeth, before we do anything, and that’s just us to get a nicer result.
