Hi, it’s Dr Michael Ghobrial here from Sure Dental.
Often when I’m chatting to our young adult patients, the million-dollar question they ask is, “Am I going to have to have my wisdom teeth removed?” which is obviously a big question. It’s an interesting question. So, I thought I would record this video to share with you the three main reasons that you might need your wisdom teeth removed.
Now, not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed. It’s the kind of thing you only want to do if you have to. But the three main reasons you might need your wisdom teeth removed is one, if they’re causing an infection. So, sometimes wisdom teeth don’t come all the way through and an infection builds up, and it can actually get very, very uncomfortable, and people can have recurrent infections there. And so, that could be a reason for needing your wisdom teeth removed, and that is infections.
The second reason is if your wisdom teeth are impacted and the worry is that in time, they may cause an infection or compromise the teeth in front of them. And if that’s the case, we like to time the wisdom teeth removal while our patients are young and the roots aren’t well-developed, and the bone is nice and soft so that recovery is smooth when the tooth removal as atraumatic as possible. And often, we partner with some really great oral surgeons who are very, very gentle and delicate, and it gets done while our patients are asleep.
The third reason is sometimes wisdom teeth cause big decay on the teeth in front of them. Because of the inclination, the position of them, they compromise the tooth in front of them. And in that case, we need the wisdom teeth removed as well.
So, these are the three main reasons that we find ourselves removing wisdom teeth.
