The Importance of Tooth Structure Preservation in Doing Dental Veneers
The Importance of Tooth Structure Preservation in Doing Dental Veneers

Hi, it’s Dr Michael Ghobrial here from Sure Dental at Wavell Heights here in Brisbane. I often get asked, “Michael, I really want porcelain veneers, but I’m worried about the tooth being reduced,” and it brings up the really important question of the importance of preserving tooth structure when doing porcelain veneers

And this is a topic I’m incredibly passionate about, so I thought I’d record this video to discuss why it’s so important to preserve your tooth structure when you’re getting the porcelain veneer procedure.

When we do porcelain veneers, one of the biggest factors for success is actually keeping all of the veneers in tooth enamel, that allows us to bond things really predictably and well, it allows a long-lasting bond, it prevents stains from getting in underneath the veneers, and most importantly, it preserves your tooth structure and the strength of your teeth.
The best way to achieve this is actually by working backwards.

If you think of it like building a house, we like to draw up all the architectural drawings before we start building. So, we like to get our patients in, take photos, we take a 3D scan of the teeth, and then we do a mock-up to see what it will look like. We show that to our patients, and then we work backwards. Once our patients are happy, we’re happy with the tooth proportions and the look then we consider the amount of tooth reduction required.

What that allows us to do is in many cases, actually not touch any tooth structure at all and in other cases, very minimal tooth structure. We get a result that cosmetically looks amazing, but we’ve cost our patients very, very little tooth structure. We’ve preserved that tooth structure, which is so important for bonding and also tooth strength.

So if you are considering getting veneers done, please make sure you go to a practice who does a pre-operative mock-up and shows you the smile that you’re going to get before starting any procedure. Also, choose a practice who is going to be super-conservative of your tooth structure, because once they are gone, they are gone forever.

If you’ve ever been considering upgrading your smile with porcelain veneers, we would love to look after you.
