My name is Lizzy and I am a Dental Hygienist and Therapist here at Sure Dental.

Earlier this week I met Mary at her son’s Preventive Care appointment. Mary shared her exciting news with me that she is pregnant with her second child and she asked me if she should go to the dentist while she is pregnant.

This had me thinking, maybe there are other expectant mothers who are also unsure if they should go to the dentist whilst they are pregnant.

The answer is yes – definitely. Let me share with you the three reasons why you should go to the dentist when you are pregnant.

Morning sickness can result in an increased risk of tooth erosion and decay. Being aware of the acid wear and treatment options can help to limit the damage caused by morning sickness.

As the pregnancy progresses there is an increase in hormones that can cause inflammation and gum disease. You may find blood after brushing or flossing, this is a sign that your gums are irritated and having a professional clean can help to prevent the inflammation from causing permanent damage to your gums. Untreated gum disease can cause premature labour so having regular cleans whilst you are pregnant can help to prevent premature birth.

And finally, babies are born with sterile mouths meaning the healthier parents’ mouths are the lower risk the child’s teeth will be exposed to the bacteria that cause both tooth decay and gum disease.

Once your baby arrives, adjusting to the new routine can take a while so scheduling your clean towards the end of pregnancy can help to relieve the pressures of dental appointments during this precious time.

So, if you have recently found out that you are pregnant or may be preparing to meet your baby in the next few months, would love to look after you here at Sure Dental.

Simply complete the form on our website at www.suredental.com.au, give us a call on 07 3256 9111, or direct message us via sms or social media, and our friendly team will be in touch to help you organise your appointment. See you in the next video.
