How Long Will Dental Veneers Last and is There a Warranty?

Hi, it’s Dr Michael Ghobrial here from Sure Dental. And we are fortunate enough that we have a lot of patients coming in and wanting to improve their smiles. And they come and may ask us for dental veneers, whether they’ve had friends who’ve had veneers with us, whether they’ve seen some of our work online. We get many patients coming in wanting to talk about dental veneers. And it’s something we love to do. It’s something we love to be part of that process when it’s appropriate and beneficial for the patient to give them a beautiful smile. But one of the most common questions I get is, “How long will dental veneers last? And is there a warranty?” Now, that’s always a difficult answer to give that sort of question because everyone is different, and not all veneers are created equally. But in saying that, it’s a very fair question before someone is to invest in the expense of having dental veneers to want to know what kind of lifetime are they going to get?

So, I guess I can answer that question in a blog format, in a general setting. And obviously that some of that information may be a little bit different. Once we assess a particular situation, a particular person, depending on what’s going on in their mouth. But generally speaking, if we are doing resin veneers or resin bonded veneers, I tend to tell patients that they’ll get somewhere in the four to six-year mark in terms of lifespan. The resin will look amazing when it goes on, it will need some maintenance and polishing over those years, but it will dull and stain with time. But we sort of tend to find that people get about that four to six-year lifespan out of their resin veneers before they need replacing.

Now, some things that will affect that will be the individual’s diet and oral hygiene. And if people’s diet is poor, and they’re not cleaning their teeth, there’s not much we can do about that. And also their clenching and grinding. If they’re a big grinder, we will normally make a night guard, or we’ll use some Botox to relax the muscles. Again, if a patient is given a night guard and doesn’t wear that, that might adversely affect how long their resin veneers will last.

In terms of warranty, I’m usually pretty disappointed if we’re getting less than that three to five-year mark, and so we normally will definitely warranty them for the first three years and then maybe take a shared responsibility from the three to five-year mark for the resin veneers. As for porcelain veneers, they are a different material. They don’t lose their gloss, they don’t lose their shine, and they don’t stain up the way the resin. And so with porcelain veneers, we’re really shooting for a minimum of 10 years lifespan out of those. And we expect to get that 10 years when we do our porcelain veneers. 

And that is something, again, assuming the patient is cleaning their teeth well, their oral hygiene is sound, their diet is good and they are wearing the protective things that we might choose to put them in, whether it’s a night guard or Botox, we will actually warranty those veneers for that sort of, again, for the first five years, we take full responsibility and in the five to 10 years, often there’s a shared responsibility with our patients. But in reality, I have patients whose porcelain veneers have been there for 15, or 20 years and still looking great.

I know we have Karen in our office where I did some porcelain veneers for her 11 years ago and we often get her to smile for patients to show them what it looks like 11 years on. They are quite long-lasting and they look beautiful from the day they are put on. And so, that’s how long you can expect from dental veneers if they’re done well and if you maintain them well.
