Hi. It’s Dr Michael Ghobrial here from Sure Dental at Wavell Heights in Brisbane.
Just last week, our lovely patient, Ruby, who lives just 10 minutes from us at Ascot, visited us for a smile consultation on dental veneers. And she said to me, “Michael, how long will dental veneers last, and is there a warranty?”
Now, this is a complex question to answer because there are veneers, and there are veneers, and there are veneers, and so it all depends on the type of veneers as to how long we can expect to get out of them and what kind of warranty we can expect.
So with our resin veneers, generally speaking, if they’re well maintained, we can expect them to look good for about four to six years. They do dull and stain and need some active maintenance, but that’s generally the lifespan that we expect from a resin veneer.
In terms of warranty, if the patient is caring for their teeth diligently, if they see us every six months for their hygiene and we can monitor things, and if they are wearing their night guards to protect the veneers, or doing whatever it is that we recommend as a part of maintenance, then they get a two-year full warranty on their resin veneers.
Now, for porcelain veneers, we actually expect a much longer lifespan. With porcelain veneers, we are usually shooting for that 10 years and beyond stage. Now, after 10 years, your smile can change, and the veneers might not look quite as harmonious with your mouth, so that’s why we give it around that 10-year mark as our expectation.
To achieve that lifespan, once again, the patient also needs to do their part. Starting with oral hygiene, how often you’re getting your teeth cleaned by hygienists, how well we’re maintaining plaque control, how well you’re maintaining the forces, so whether someone’s wearing their night guard. Now again, if our patients are doing the things that are required to maintain those veneers, we actually give a five-year warranty on those veneers. And then, from the five to the 10-year mark, we take a bit more of a shared responsibility with our patients.
So, that’s our philosophy when it comes to warranty for veneers, and every dentist is going to have a different view about it. Some dentists say once the work is in there, we can’t control the environment in someone’s mouth, and therefore there’s no warranty for the work.
Although I appreciate the logic behind that when our patients invest money in treatment, I like them to have the assurance as to what happens if things don’t go to plan, and that is why we offer a 2-year warranty for resin or composite veneers and 5 years for porcelain veneers.
