Hi, it’s Dr Michael Ghobrial here from Sure Dental here in Brisbane North.

Last week, I met Angela from Kalinga for the first time. She’s been getting this toothache. She knew she needed a procedure done but was really anxious about visiting a dentist.

One of the most common things I noticed with new patients is that they are usually very anxious about getting a procedure done. With this in mind, I recorded this video for you to get a sense of how we help our anxious patients relax during a dental treatment here at Sure Dental.

We like to do is we like to give our patients control over their sessions with us. We like to hear what it is that they want. Some patients really want to be well-informed and know every step as things happen. And other people just want to lay back and be distracted. And, “Wake me up at the end, Michael,” is what I hear. So, for us, the first thing is listening to our patients.

We like to do is actually be gentle. If you’re incredibly gentle, that is a wonderful way to help patients be relaxed. And the longer they spend in their chair, the more confident they are that we’re not going to hurt them. And a lot of people have had experiences in the past at the dentist where they have been hurt. And we find that being really gentle and using adequate anesthesia for patients and numbing people up well in a gentle manner, using lots of numbing creams is a really helpful way.

To keep the patient distracted. Here at Sure Dental, we have a TV screen on the ceiling. We also use wireless headsets. Our patients can choose to watch something on Netflix, or online, or listen to music. This is a wonderful way to just help people relax, go to a different world and not just sit there, waiting for the sensations in their mouth to come on the dental chair. And we find that this is a really, really effective way to help our patients relax.

In addition, we like to turn the light down a little bit, so that there are fewer sensors. Other ways we do this is we can use happy gas or we can prescribe some relaxants for patients before they come and see us. So there are many ways that we can keep our anxious patients relaxed and these are just some of them.
