3 Differences Between Professional Teeth Whitening Vs DIY Teeth Whitening (Ads You See on Instagram)?
Hi, my name is Suzie, and I’m an Oral Health Therapist at Sure Dental here in North Brisbane.
We always get excited when patients come into our practice wanting to whiten their teeth. We love helping our patients get the brightest smile they’ve always wanted. In many cases, these patients have already tried DIY teeth whitening products.
And it got me thinking, this is such a good topic to share with our community.
So, here are 3 differences between professional teeth whitening at a dental practice vs DIY teeth whitening products like the ones you see on platforms such as Instagram.
Many of the DIY whitening products are from overseas, and do not adhere to the strict Australian standard. So make sure you check that the products are TGA approved and meet the Australian guidelines. When you get your professional whitening treatment at the dentist, you have the peace of mind that the product is safe. Afterall, you are putting it in your mouth, so you want to make sure it is safe.
Here at Sure Dental, we have two types of whitening systems. Professional at-home whitening and professional laser in-chair whitening.
Teeth whitening is a simple process. Whitening products contain one of two bleaches, hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These bleaches break stains into smaller pieces, which makes the colour less concentrated and your teeth brighter.
Whitening agents are unable to penetrate through food, plaque and tartar build-up. So, at Sure Dental, we always advise our patients to have a professional clean before starting their teeth whitening treatment to give them the best result.
To summarise, professional teeth whiteners are TGA approved and meet the Australian guidelines. They’re safe and effective when done under the supervision of a dental professional. And finally, laser whitening rehydrates the tooth instead of other systems that can dehydrate your teeth, affecting the pulp tissue long term.
